Free Directories / Getting Recommendations – Part 2

The Power of Recommendations

Using Free Directories to Build your Business

Part 2          Series 5, Article 2

As a local business, attracting new customers can be a major challenge. Quickly disappearing are the days when people would go to the YellowPages to find local businesses.

Today people are turning to the internet as a way to find trusted business recommendations. One way local businesses can get found is through inclusion in online directories.

Adding a listing to these online directories is easy, but if you only list in a few you’re really missing a huge opportunity to get found by online searchers.

Every individual directory that you submit to is another chance to get found online so it’s important to make sure you’re listed in every directory possible.

It’s true that more people trust peer recommendations over advertising.

It is a business necessity to start to collect, and use, recommendations and testimonials.

Recommendations and testimonials are one of the best ways to establish “social proof”.  How do you formalize collecting the glowing words of satisfied customers, in a way that is sharable, viral, and immediate?  Simply ask.

Here is a sample letter you may want to use to request recommendations from your friends, customers and clients:

Hello (customer’s name),

I am in the process of updating the online presence of my business, (business name).  I would be very grateful for any testimonials and recommendations you would be willing to share regarding my business.

As I continue to grow, my strongest marketing tools include word of mouth and recommendations. I would like to utilize feedback from satisfied clients to help gain the trust of future ones.

Would you be willing to go to a few of the internet directories listed below and leave a recommendation for our services and how we’ve helped you?

I know your time is valuable and I thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

(your name)

Next week I will cover specific catagory directories in which you can list your business.  There are specific directories for massage therapists, pet sitters, restaurants, bookstores, etc!

Free Directories / Getting Recommendations – Part 1

The Power of Recommendations

Using Free Directories to Build your Business

Part I          Series 5, Article 1

Many of you remember the pre-internet days when looking something up in Ma Bell’s Yellow Pages or calling 411 were the only way you could find a phone number or address for a business.  And we paid 25 cents for that 411 call.  Then to find out if that business was any good, we’d have to call a bunch of friends to find out if they’d had good or bad experiences with that company.  3 hours later….  :(

Now, with the internet, we can find any business in the world by just Googling some vague information about it.  Not only that, but we can map it’s location with a click of a button, go to their website, email them, call them from the computer with Skype, and read recommendations for that business from other consumers.

Within 5 minutes we’ve compared 5 plumbers, their hours, prices, distance to our home, liability insurance they carry, and read 5 recommendations, both good and bad.

It is imperative for your business to exploit every avenue of free directory listings available on the internet.  And don’t stop there…..then ask your customers, clients and friends to add recommendations to those sights.

People listen to  recommendations.  And these recommendations can make or break your business.  Be pro-active in maintenance of your listings and be in control of who is commenting on and recommending your business.

In this article, I will cover the top internet directories on which your business should be listed.

The procedures to list your business will differ slightly on each, but each will have a button or a tab that says something like “List my Business”, “Claim your Business Listing”, or something of the sorts.  On some of these websites, your business will already be listed with just basic information.  First search for your business, if it doesn’t show up then add it.  If it does show up then there will be a button asking the owner to claim the business and they will ask for a variety of ways for you to prove that you are the owner.

Filling out the forms over and over again can be a big pain.  Your computer may have an  Auto-Fill add-on that will fill in the forms for you.

If not, you can save time in filling out all of your business information by beginning with a cheat-sheet — a Word Doc with all of your pertinent business information, that you can simply copy and paste from.  Include: business name, address, phone number, website, email address, number of years in business, owner’s name, and a brief description of your business.

Facebook – Tips from Around the World

Social Networking – Facebook Tips from around the World

1. Ask Questions – “It’s not enough to be broadcasting promotional messages — brands should make an effort at engaging with their audiences. Asking questions is a great way to kick off that two-way dialogue.” - Erica Swallow, Mashable

2. Don’t Over-Automate – “Don’t automatically feed your blog posts or your Twitter updates into your Page. Often, automated content doesn’t make it into users’ News Feeds.” - Ekaterina Walter, social media strategist, Intel

3. Don’t Make it All About You – “As a rough rule of thumb, post four status updates on items about outside news items or discoveries for every post promoting a product. And when you do mention a product or service, try to do so in a helpful way.” - JD Lasica, Socialmedia.biz

4. Leverage Testimonials & Feedback – “Use Facebook to engage directly with your customers and make them part of your marketing efforts… Ask customers to share their successes on your wall and get feedback on new product features.” - Leyl Master Black, managing director, Sparkpr

5. Be Human and Personable – “The most successful B2B pages often combine demonstrations of expertise with humor and personality, sounding more like a real conversation than stilted marketing and sales speak.” - Karlie Justus, Social Media B2B

6. Offer Variety – “Mix it up a little between videos, photos, questions, information, etc. Don’t have your own videos? YouTube is a treasure trove of ‘em, and sharing sites like Reddit and Digg are great sources to discover stuff people like.” - Linda Bustos, GetElastic

7. Be Active – “Don’t take it for granted that you have a page available. No matter how great you’ve made it, if you aren’t active, it defeats the whole purpose of having one.” - Orli Yakuel, TechCrunch

8. Post Engaging, Thought-Provoking Content – “Unless they’re interesting enough to draw comments, simple status updates aren’t going to move you into Top News feeds. Publish content that naturally encourages click-throughs or creates discussion.” Jim Lodico, Social Media Examiner

9. Make Requests – “Want your fans to express their views on a topic? Ask them. Want your fans to share their favorite content with you? Ask them. Want your fans to share your content? Ask them. You get the point.” - Ekaterina Walter, social media strategist, Intel

10. Address Negativity With Tact – “Should there be a negative comment, which scares many B2B companies, address it with understanding and sincerity. In most cases, transparency and listening go a long way in stemming off negative feedback.” - Dave Folkens, TopRank Online Marketing Blog

11. Keep it Fresh – “Update your group or fan page on a regular basis with helpful information and answers to questions.” - Debbie Hemley, Social Media Examiner

12. Be Consistent – “Nothing makes for a bad Facebook Group or Page than stagnant content. Like a corporate blog or dynamic website, you need to engage people regularly. Even if it’s just posting a new message board topic each week, do something on a regular basis (the more frequent the better) to elicit a response from folks.” - Jason Falls, Social Media Explorer

13. But Don’t Go Overboard – “One or two strong Facebook updates per day is better than a half dozen scattershot updates that fly by and don’t have the staying power to attract people’s feedback.” - JD Lasica, Socialmedia.biz

14. Encourage Action – “Don’t be afraid to ask users to share objects or click on the Like button—especially if you’re new to Facebook. It can take a little while for a Facebook page to gain momentum. Anything you can do to help it along will only speed the process.” Jim Lodico, Social Media Examiner

15. Promote Your Page Offline – “If your business is run from physical premises, put a placard on the front desk letting your customers know you’re on Facebook.” - Mari Smith, Social Media Examiner

16. Offer Contests and Giveaways – “Contests and giveaways should not require much effort on the part of your fans but should offer something real and valuable to them.” - Candis Hidalgo, content and social media marketing director, FaceItPages.com

17. Provide Incentives & Motivation – “If you want to get people to Like your Facebook page, and become more familiar with your products and services, a strong incentive can help achieve this.” - Graham Charlton, Econsultancy

18. Think Strategically About Timing – “Because you have just a short window of opportunity to gain traction with a Share (time decay factor), think carefully when planning frequency and content, and timing. Consider time zones – if you always post at the same time of day, Fans across the pond may never see your updates. Spread the love!” - Linda Bustos, GetElastic

19. Understand How Facebook Works – “Write for the newsfeed, not for your wall…Though some people will be led straight to your wall through a link or ad for example, your existing fans are going to see your update in their newsfeed…Remember that saying something like ‘check out our tab on the side’ is completely out of context for people seeing this update in their newsfeed.” - Lauren Fisher, The Next Web

20. Analyze Engagement – “Monitor which posts attract the most Likes and comments (eyeball), and use Insights – Facebook’s own analytics tool – for data. (Integrating your Facebook Page provides much better data).” - Linda Bustos, GetElastic

Facebook – Social Networking – Part 2

Creating a Facebook Page for your Business, Part 2

Series 4, Article 8

It will be much easier to create your Facebook Business Page if you do a little homework first.  Figure out what will turn your Facebook fans into paying customers and what will turn your paying customers into Facebook Fans.

If you are a Bookstore, adding detailed information like address, store hours, and comments about new books being released will be appropriate information to share.  If you’re a band or a film, adding songs and videos is key.  If you sell a product, photos of your products with reviews and prices will make a big impact.  Gather the types of information that you want to include and you can always add more later.

Choosing the right name for your page is very important because this is how your fans will find you.  If McDonald’s named their page McD’s in order to be cute, less people would find it.  Make sure you use a name that your fans will recognize.  The name of the Page should be the exact same as the name of the business, organization, product, band, or individual.

Then pick the category that best fits what you’d like to promote on Facebook. Don’t worry if you don’t find a perfect fit, but pick the closest match since you won’t be able to change your category.  Then click “Create Page”.

Next, click “upload a picture” near the top and upload the graphic or photo that best represents you. This will be seen as a thumbnail in the News Feed when your friends interact with you.  A logo, storefront, or group photo may work well.  Make sure the image is still clear when reduced to thumbnail size.  If your page is about a person, use a photo of them.  If it is a business, use a recognizable logo.  Now, if the logo is in a long horizontal format, it will end up very small or even cropped off if you upload it to be in the square profile photo format.  Redesign your logo wording to fit in a square format or use just a graphic that is recognizable for your business.  Such as McDonald’s using only the golden arches.

Then, the most important step in creating an interesting Facebook Fan Page is adding information.  Click “Add information to this Page” under the profile picture and enter as much basic and detailed information you can think of. The fields available will depend on your Page type.  The more details you can add about who you are, what you do, and when and where customers can buy your products, the more successful you will be.

Like User Profiles (personal Facebook pages), Business Pages have multiple tabs. By default, your Page has a Wall tab for you and your fans to share content, an Info tab for you to share business information, and a Boxes tab for application modules.

You can choose to use Facebook applications, such as Photos, Reviews, and Discussion Board.  In addition, applications built by outside developers can be used as Page tabs.  (I will cover more of these in the next articles.)

The more rich content you add, the more ways users can interact with it and share it with their friends. Post photos of your products, your employees and/or customers, the latest events you’ve held at your store, etc.  Add video clips of your bar or restaurant in action.  ‘Behind the scenes’ content is always fun, like photos of the employees doing inventory, or decorating for a party, or painting the front door. List an event for your grand opening or in-store sale. Write a note about upcoming promotions. The choices are unlimited!

Facebook – Social Networking – Part 1

4.7. – Social Networking – Facebook Part 1

Facing the Facebook Revolution

What is this Facebook thing?

You can think of Facebook as your personal Bulletin Board.  (Be sure to go to “Privacy Settings” and indicate that only people you have labeled as “friends” can see your profile and your wall.)  This is where you let all your friends and relatives know what you are up to.  You can share photos from your last vacation and your friends can let you know how jealous they are!  You can share links to videos or articles that you find interesting too.  Treat your “wall” just like you would a bulletin board.  Check it for messages from people, ideas and comments about current affairs, photos they post, or even chat with them live while you are online.  It can be a great way to keep in contact with friends and family, and even find long lost friends that you haven’t spoken to in years.

Your Online Message Board

Ever want to jot a quick “hi” to someone without having to write a long detailed email or get stuck on the phone for ½ hour?  Ever want to let a bunch of friends know what’s going on in your life without having to call or email each one….and without doing the dreaded mass email, which seems so impersonal?  Posting updates on your life on Facebook is an easy way to update everyone without making people feel carbon-copied.

Your Online Photo Album

In addition to keeping up with friends and family, Facebook is a great place to upload family photos, vacation photos, party or holiday photos, etc. Rather than having to pull out the photo album when people are over at the house, your friends and family can pull up your Facebook page and see your photos easily.

Facebook for Finding Old Friends

Have you ever wonder whatever happened to the boy next door? Or your best friend from elementary school? With more and more people joining Facebook, it is becoming a great place to look up old friends and getting back in touch.  Historically, guys from your past have always been easier to find years later because guys don’t change their last names when they get married.  But to find an old girlfriend?……..Impossible!  Now with Facebook, most females list their married last name(s) hyphenated with their maiden name, making them easier to find!  Of course it will always to more difficult to find a John Smith than a Gertrude Oppenheimer because of the sheer number of matching profiles you will have to look through, but the process is far easier thanks to Facebook.

Facebook PROFILE for Business

You can also use your regular Facebook Profile to connect with co-workers and old co-workers to keep the workplace networking going. It’s a fact that one of the best ways to find a new job is to be recommended by a friend, so keeping up with business contacts can be very important.

Facebook PAGES for Business

Unlike your personal Facebook Profile, which is titled with your first and last name(s), your Facebook Page will be titled with the name of your business.  Using your Facebook Profile is a great way to connect with people, but if you want to promote your business, a regular Facebook Profile is not the place to do that. A Facebook Page is a public profile that enables you to share your business and products with Facebook users.  When your fans interact with your Facebook Page, stories linking to your Page can go to their friends via News Feed.  As these friends interact with your Page, News Feed keeps driving word-of-mouth to a wider circle of friends.  What’s great about a Facebook Page is that anyone can see it, “like” it and share it with all their friends, which adds more and more exposure for your business….for free!
